About This Ceremony

Rudrabhishekam is the supreme Abhishekam performed for Lord Shiva with the continuous chanting of Sri Rudram from the Yajur Veda — considered the most ancient and powerful hymn dedicated to Shiva. The Sri Rudram consists of 11 Anuvakas (chapters) in the Namakam and 11 in the Chamakam, together comprising the most comprehensive invocation of Shiva's grace. During the Rudrabhishekam at Sri Aadhi Varahi Temple, the Shiva Lingam of Sri Samba Sadashiva Murthy and Sri Narmadeshwarar receive ceremonial bathing while a team of Vedic priests chant the complete Sri Rudram. The Abhishekam materials include the traditional Ekadasha Dravya (eleven sacred substances): water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugarcane juice, tender coconut water, sandalwood paste, vibhuti (sacred ash), turmeric, and rose water. The Rudrabhishekam is performed on Pradosham days, Maha Shivaratri, Mondays, and upon devotee sponsorship. It is considered one of the most powerful remedies for all planetary afflictions and the most direct path to Lord Shiva's grace.

Significance

Rudrabhishekam is the king of all Abhishekams. The vibrations of Sri Rudram combined with the sacred bathing of the Lingam create the most powerful purification and blessing.
