About the Ceremony
Ashtami Tithi (the 8th lunar day), especially during the waning moon phase (Krishna Paksha), is sacred to Lord Kala Bhairavar — the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with time, protection, and liberation from fear.
At Sri Aadhi Varahi Temple, the Ashtami Puja centers around Sri Maha Rudra Bhairavar. The evening ritual features special Abhishekam with holy water, vibhuti (sacred ash), milk, and sandalwood, accompanied by solemn chanting of Bhairava Ashtakam and Shiva mantras. Devotees light traditional pumpkin lamps (Pusnikai Deepam) filled with neem oil or ghee, and offer garlands made of Medhu Vada (savory lentil donuts).
Worshipping Kala Bhairavar on Ashtami is considered a supreme remedy for overcoming debilitating fears, managing time effectively, clearing severe debts, and protecting against negative vibrations and evil eye afflictions.
