About This Ceremony

Alankaram is the art of divine decoration — adorning the deity with fresh flowers, precious silks, sacred jewellery, and fragrant garlands. This ritual transforms the sanctum into a vision of celestial beauty and is performed with great devotion and artistic skill by the temple priests. Following the Alankaram, Deeparadhana (the waving of lamps) is performed. The priest waves a multi-tiered camphor lamp (Karpoora Arati) before the fully adorned deity while sacred bells ring and devotees receive the darshan (divine vision). The flame represents the light of knowledge dispelling the darkness of ignorance. The noon Alankaram at Sri Aadhi Varahi Temple is particularly elaborate, with the presiding deity dressed in specially selected colours and flowers that correspond to the day of the week and the ruling planetary deity.

Significance

Alankaram represents the devotee's desire to offer the most beautiful things to the Divine. Deeparadhana illuminates the path from darkness to light.
