The royal guardian deity of Tamil Nadu — the fierce protector of villages, upholder of justice, and the lord who watches over the temple at night.
Sri Raja Karuppannaswamy (also known as Karuppar) is one of the most powerful and beloved guardian deities (Kaval Deivam) of Tamil Nadu. His name 'Raja Karuppanna' means 'The Dark King' — not in reference to evil, but to the infinite, all-absorbing darkness that existed before creation itself. He is the primordial protector, the divine enforcer of dharma and justice. In the Tamil folk tradition, Karuppannaswamy is the guardian who stands at the boundaries of temples and villages, protecting the community from external threats — both physical and supernatural. He is depicted as a fierce warrior with a sword and shield, often accompanied by horses and dogs. Despite his fearsome appearance, he is deeply compassionate and is known as a deity who answers prayers swiftly. At Sri Aadhi Varahi Temple, Sri Raja Karuppannaswamy serves as the primary Kshetrapalaka (field protector) — the guardian who watches over the entire temple complex, especially during the night hours. He is worshipped with offerings of rooster, lemon, camphor, and vetrilai-pakku (betel leaves and areca nut). Devotees seek his blessings for protection, justice in disputes, and victory over adversaries.
Karuppannaswamy is the fearless protector and enforcer of divine justice. He guards sacred spaces and protects devotees from enemies, black magic, and supernatural threats. His worship brings swift results.
